Sacai was founded by Chitose Abe in 1999 in Tokyo, Japan. The brand incorporates the idea of hybridization through juxtapositions of contrasting fabric textures, such as knits with super fine fabrics and the use of techniques based on reinterpretations of the garment's patterns, transforming the pieces into unexpected shapes and silhouettes. Although his collections may seem to focus on femininity, Abe's interest is in creating clothes that are completely unique and timeless, innovative and experimental. For Abe, who is influenced by observation of the surrounding environment and the functions of daily life, the Sacai collection has a distinctive elegance based on renderings and transformations of basic and classic objects. The result is a collection of items that can easily transition from one occasion to another and are not reserved just for special occasions. The Sacai men's collection launched in spring 2009 is based on the same philosophy and similar approach as Abe's women's collection. Basic men's items crafted with care and infused with a touch of elegance. The Sacai women's collection began showing in Paris during Fashion Week in October 2009 and currently both the women's and men's collections are presented in Paris.
